This new project has been made possible by financial assistance from the Women's Program, Status of Women Canada and is called
"Creating Employment Opportunities for Immigrant Women".
It builds on the success of the Livelihood Project to date and has four objectives and three outcomes. This project will run from January 2006 - December 31, 2006.
Objectives:
The objectives of the project are to:
Understand the challenges that immigrant women face when trying to enter the workforce at a level commensurate with their qualifications
Understand the challenges that employers face when employing immigrant women
Identify potential solutions and current good practices, and
Develop specific materials and supports that employers, employer federations and self-regulatory bodies can use to address challenges that they have identified related to hiring immigrant women.
Develop specific policy recommendations to all levels of government that would address these challenges and barriers identified.
Outcomes:
The outcomes of the project are to:
Create an awareness of 'the diversity advantage' of hiring immigrant and visible minority women amongst employers, employer federations and self-regulating bodies and give them practical tools and suggestions for how to identify immigrant women who have the skills they are seeking.
Provide recommendations Federal government officials and Ministers and MPs for actions that will have been developed co-operatively to address the issue of immigrant women's transition to employment in a practical way.
Provide women with the tools necessary to advocate for policy changes to facilitate the integration of women into the Canadian labour market.
